Abstract

Background: Cognitive decline in the elderly can progress to dementia and impact quality of life. Jigsaw puzzle therapy is considered to have the potential to improve cognitive function and memory in elderly people with mild dementia, but its application in Maluku has not been widely explored and therefore needs to be tested in nursing care. Purpose: This study aims to explore the application of Jigsaw Puzzle therapy as a nursing care intervention for the elderly with dementia in Maluku. Method: This study is a case study of two elderly people with dementia in a social care setting. The intervention included three days of jigsaw puzzle therapy, each session lasting 10–20 minutes, three times a week. Cognitive function was assessed using the SPMSQ questionnaire before and after the intervention. Results: The study results showed gradual improvements in memory and orientation in both respondents; SPMSQ scores decreased from mild intellectual impairment to intact intellectual function. Jigsaw puzzle therapy also improved the ability to remember names, dates, and even surnames. Conclusion: Jigsaw Puzzle intervention has a positive impact on gradually improving the cognitive function of the elderly.
