THE EFFECT OF BALANCE EXERCISES ON THE RISK OF FALLS IN THE ELDERLY AT THE PONDOK LANSIA TULUS KASIH FOUNDATION BANDUNG

Abstract

Background: ndonesia has entered the ageing population structure since 2021 with a total elderly population of 29.3 million people, where the percentage of the elderly population has reached 10% (Central Statistics Agency, 2022). The elderly often experience complaints that can interfere with functional activities and decrease body balance and coordination that tends to regress. As many as 8 elderly people at Pondok Lansia Tulus Kasih Bandung experienced a high risk of falling. Prevention that can be done through physical exercise to improve and restore muscle function, one of which is balance exercises. Purpose is to solve problems and to add insight into interventions that can overcome problems faced by the elderly that affect balance. Method: The research design used was Preexperimental One Group Pretest-Posttest with purposive sampling technique. The sample of this study was taken according to the criteria of inclusion and exclusion, so the sample used by researchers in this study was 15 respondents. Data collection was carried out through Timed Up and Go Test measurements. Performed balance exercise 6 times. Data analysis was carried out univariately and bivariately by finding the mean value and performing a Dependent Test. Result: The results of the univariate analysis mean value of the fall risk score of the elderly before being given balance training was 40.6 and after being given balance training was 32.3. The results of bivariate analysis obtained a pvalue of 0.000. This means a pvalue of < α 0.005. Conclusion: there is an effect of balance training on the risk of falling in the elderly atYayasan Pondok Lansia Tulus Kasih Bandung.
